The Center for Mental Health and Media, a division of the psychiatry department at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, has done a series of studies to better understand how, when and why middle-school kids play electronic games. Our goal was to help parents, pediatricians and teachers understand what patterns of game play are typical, and which ones are less common and might be linked to problems. The research included a survey of 1,254 children in Pennsylvania and South Carolina, and focus groups with 42 boys and 21 parents in the greater Boston area. The results of this research, as well as other information for parents, are described in the recently published book Grand Theft Childhood: The Surprising Truth About Violent Video Games and What Parents Can Do.
Nearly half of the 7th and 8th grade children surveyed said they started playing video games by first grade; by second grade, two-thirds were playing electronic games. Two-thirds of boys had played at least one Mature-rated game title "a lot in the past six months," with little difference between 12-year-olds and 14-year-olds. In other words, violent video games are a fact of life for the average preteen boy.Boys like online games packed with action like sports games or fighting and shooting games. Games where boys can go on a quest or work toward a goal are also good choices. Multiplayer role-playing games, such as "Runescape" and "World of Warcraft," are popular with many boys. Games featuring characters from movies and TV shows are another good choice, since boys may be familiar with the characters.

Relay games are great if you have a gym or an open field where you can play. There are several types of relay games. Players can line up and race back and forth, either as fast as they can, or over an obstacle course. Players can use an unusual method of locomotion, such as crawling or doing somersaults, or in pairs by leap-frogging each other or running a three-legged relay. Players can line up in two lines, opposite each other, and each pair can toss, throw or pass something between them, such as a ball or an egg, and whoever avoids dropping it the longest is the winner. A relay can also be done in a line, where each boy does a task in turn and the last one runs around to the beginning of the line, and several lines of boys compete to see which is the fastest. They might pass a ball or balloon between their legs or a teammate might leapfrog over each member or crawl between their legs. Another gym game that boys might like to play is dodgeball.
