Gujarat State Archives have been carved out from several Princely States and Political agencies of British India. The former rulers and administrators connected with the former Princely administration and agencies of British India, are in possession of a very old and valuable records of archival importance in form of files and manuscripts. These records constitute a part of historical and cultural heritage of Gujarat and are very useful for research and reference.

The records holdings of the Gujarat State Archives are broadly divided into two distinct series, viz., The records of the former princely states and the secretariat records. The records of princely states comprise of manuscripts / Books, volumes and proceedings etc. from 1820 to 1947 A.D. These records also contains information regarding administrative set up of these states and their relations with British Government. After the integration of States these records came under the custody of the Revenue Department. After 1981 the State Archives has took over the charge of selected record offices as stated in Annexure-I for better preservation and conservation of records. The Secretariat Records comprised of proceedings and files for the period of 1947 to 1960.

The Photographs and Films Section of Parliamentary Museum and Archives preserves authentic, comprehensive, complete and up-to-date pictorial record of the history of the institution of Parliament, its activities and of eminent personalities. Photo Archives has been able to collect and systematically maintain nearly 10,000 photographs relating to parliamentary activities and distinguished persons. The Archives Section of PMA acquires and preserves the records connected with the framing of India's Constitution, the growth and working of parliamentary institutions and the private papers of parliamentarians irrespective of their political affiliations. Members wishing to hold their papers confidential for a specified number of years, are provided with the facility. A number of Members of Parliament have deposited in Parliamentary Archives, their diaries, correspondence with the important national leaders, photographs and other documents connected with their parliamentary work.

At a suitable time, these records would be open for consultation to scholars, private as well as official to promote scholarly ventures in the sphere of parliamentary and democratic traditions, practices and institutions. Thus PMA would act as a treasure-house and research and communication centre. From time to time, Parliamentary Museum and Archives, in cooperation with official agencies, organises for Members of Parliament and the general public exhibitions on varying themes, on the functioning and achievements of Parliament and democratic institutions.
